Assuming money is not the most important thing, the next thing I want to achieve is to improve both my English and Chinese abilities. A few things I want to do include:

Up my English vocabularies
Read meaningful Chinese writings
Increase usage in Mandarin or Shanghainese when I speak to my daughter
Write something in Chinese on a daily basis. Maybe start a new blog in Chinese.

I don't understand why Kindle is a good idea... I know it can store many eBooks on 1 single device and it's perfect for people on the go and saves printing resources. But for me, if I want to read a book or a magazine, I want to be able to flip it else why not just read the abundance material already available on the web?

I see people using Kindle on the plane all the time. It looks like they are reading a pdf file. What fun is that?

And I had to literally drag myself out of bed this morning. The idea of going to work just seems so foreign after 12 days of vacation! I did not get to work until 11:12 am after dropping off my kid to school. And better yet, I forgot my work badge.

While driving to work, I was thinking to myself ...

I am not a good mom (too tardy)
I am not a good wife (too lazy)
I am not a good daughter (don't call my parents enough)
I am not a good sister (in every sense)
I am not a good worker (too bored and unhappy)
I am not even a good friend (hardly make time to stay in touch)

So what've I been doing? Where's my contribution, if any?

I have a few New Year's Resolutions for 2011 but I am not sure if I want to write it down now and have them staring back at me a few months down the road. Hmm, I will have to procrastinate on this. :P

I am thinking of giving my 3-year old this book for her birthday now instead of waiting for Christmas. It's almost Hot Pot season! Beef, bamboo shoots, tofu, Napa cabbage, mushroom of all kinds, shrimps, daikon, vermicelli, are probably my favorite ingredients for hot pot! Have not really tried adding fish or crab or meat balls. But anything goes went it comes to yosenabe! :)

Just finished watching the Korean version of the movie. I am totally okay with the storyline even though I see so many reviews calling it bad and illogical . I just really like the actress, 文根英. She has a very cute face to begin with and her ability to get those huge tears rolling down the cheeks always melt my heart. The main actor was very good, too, I thought. Not sure what is not to love about the movie. I would not mind watching it again at all!! :)

I got this $80.00 book from my boss the other day and just wasn't at all excited.
Today, I finally took it out from my bookshelf at work and guess what I noticed?
Yes, the cover is a picture of Hong Kong and its Victoria Harbor! An interesting choice for the front cover of a highly technical book, wouldn't you say?

Hot Summer Days (2010)

The Hong Kong version of the movie Valentine's Day or Love Actually (replacing the Christmas theme with Hot Summer) with 5 love stories in one. While only 1 or 2 stories in the movies are well developed , it's still surprisingly entertaining with many new faces and fair acting. The cinematography by Wing Shya is really what made the movie works.

This has to be one of my favorite pictures this year.

A picture that shows all the possessions of this particular family in China. They have to be one of the greenest and most earth-friendly families around.

If we were to do the same, how much stuff will fill the picture?

For starter, a dozen pair of shoes, 3-4 suitcases of clothing and accessories, 5-6 boxes filled with electronic gadgets, a truck load of home appliances and sports equipment, plus crates filled with books and toys... it will probably take days to lay them all out before a picture can be taken.

I get sad and worried whenever I see stray cats on our work campus. There were 4 small kitties running around since last spring and I have only seen 1 of them just a few weeks ago. Today, my husband saw this one and took a picture to show me. This is one of those 4, so now at least I know 2 (1 grey, and this one black and white) out of 4 have survived the cold and rainy season. There should be 2 grey kitties...

Then my husband saw someone had left a kitty cage for the stray cat within the bushes and even some dry food! So I am really happy. Someone actually did something useful rather than like me, just sitting there and did nothing. I will go check out the cage after work today.

Finally saw this movie!! A clean, quiet, light movie with 3 women crossing paths in Finland. Some people might feel this movie is like a breath of fresh air. Some people might be constantly bugged by the question of how she can sustain the business ... But for someone living in California, the life style is not too different from what's portrayed making it tough to like or dislike this movie. It just sort of serves as a nice reminder that we are living the way many people are striving for and should be contented.

Lately, I have been thinking what is the Return on Investment (ROI) for an expensive college education? With the explosion of information available on the internet, how useful is a formal 40K/yr college education from a mid-tier school, really. I think I learned most of my knowledge through work and reading on my own after college. I could not recall applying anything useful that I learned in college even though my focus of studies were in Accounting and Computer Science which is supposed to be the most practical among all other majors. Accounting & tax rules change every year and they are different in different country. Computer languages got obsoleted and simplified in no time. Business Law is all really applying your common sense, as far as I am concerned being a TA in that for 2 years.

So when it's time for my daughter to go to college, would I, or should I be paying 80K/yr for a degree that's not going to be too useful except maybe as one-liner in the resume? I think basic training really starts when you work for different big and small companies.

Childhood neighbor

In many ways, Facebook has been a wonderful thing (tool, invention, app...?) to me. Through it I reconnected with tons of people whom I would never have been able to stay in touch with unless I bumped into them on the street.

Recently, I reconnected with my childhood neighbor on FB and she sent me this photo.

This is the view from the building I grew up in back when I was a kid in Hong Kong. We had moved since 1987 (?) and the place is now worth over $24.5 million HK dollars, which means it would be extremely unlikely for me to see this view again. But this childhood neighbor/friend of mine just moved back to the building and took this picture and shared it with me! It's almost like a wish answered! Even though the view has changed with those tall buildings standing between the Victoria Harbor and the flat, it's nonetheless the same view some 20 plus years back!

I feel very happy!!!

Bought this old-fashioned cookbook over the weekend. Old-fashioned because it has no pictures in it at all. Since I seldom stay at any country inn in US, I thought having this book would let me get a hold of some of those treasured recipes from the grand-ma or even great grand-ma generations. All the recipes look very simple but full of flavors! I plan to go through it and bookmark the ones to try.

I love to watch Tanaka Rena maybe because her look resembles a cute little kitten to me. This movie is quite interesting. I think most people will find it very slow and boring, but I really enjoyed it. I like the story line and the interactions between the 2 main characters. It's a must see! :)

やっと見られた! It's a wonderful, heart-warming movie. I disagree with New York Times' review saying "one would wish for a fast-forward button to confirm what they already predicted." This movie is not about predicting what is going to happen next, but rather to experience the love and tenderness of human relationships and the emotions associated with deaths.

Anyway, I am a fan of 山崎努. Only he can play the characters he played in all those dramas and movies. 本木雅弘 and 広末涼子 are also good actors that I like to watch, so all in all, a great movie!

Interesting book, but don't buy it... Just read the excerpts online.

To me, I think kids learn by watching their parents and a good, stable family life set the tone and influence their personality. So if the parents have good habits and the kids are happy, then they are more likely to become successful in general.
