kotatsu are awesome! but very dangerous in the winter due to their ability to ensnare innocent pandas in their seductive isle-of-the-lotus-eaters-like warm embrace and make them pass out asleep for hours on end in the middle of the living room in winter instead of being productive after getting home from work :)
on another note, why does one need to child proof a coffee table...? *how* do you childproof a table?
If panda can leave the kotatsu to go to work, that's pretty good already! I think I would not even want to leave home all together. :-) So I agree, it's something dangerous to have in winter.
Have you seen the Japanese drama "Nodame" with Juri Ueno & Hiroshi Tamaki? There was this one episode on how they were attached to the kotatsu and slowly empty bottles and cup o noodles and other garbage start piling up around the kotatsu. They have to finally throw the kotatsu in the dumpster to get their lives back. It was pretty funny.
Kids at crawling stage like to grab on to anything they see to try to stand up. And because they are not stable and don't have a sense of danger, it's easy for them to knock their head or face near the table edge. So instead of installing these (http://www.amazon.com/Toddler-Shield-Table-Cushion-NEUTRAL/dp/B00119TIXE), don't you think the kotatsu is a better solution?
