War of the Worlds
I never wanted to watch this movie to begin with and I was right all along.
This has to be the dumbest movie I have ever seen. So stupid, nothing is believable. I absolutely hated it. I was yawning all the way and wanted to skip forward but my silly husband would not do so. I wasted 2 hours of my precious time. I am in a lot of anger right now. What an all in all STUPID MOVIE!!! I don't care about those effects if the story is not there. This should have been a video game instead.

Are you refering to the original or the remake? I found the new version to be very well done and as thought provoking as the original. I also thought Spielberg did a clever job of maintaining all the symbology of the original but updating it for the modern audience.
It's the one that came out last year. There were so many things in the movie that did not make sense.
I could not understand how come only one car is working and why Boston is a safe place to go to. And how did Robbie get to Boston? So it was better off for Robbie to face the alien head on than hiding from it? And I thought there were tons of those alien clunky tripod things but how come killing one makes the others go berserk? It just does not make sense and when movie like this going more for the cinematic effects than having a story that makes sense, I just can't help rolling my eyes and start questioning it. I usually don't question small details but I just can not reason it out with myself.
The only part I like is maybe when the ship flipped upside down. But really, what makes people think boarding a ship is safer than staying on land?
The original film was a very top down approach to the adaptation. The scientists and leaders were explaining what was going on and how the earthlings were fighting the aliens etc.
The new version was a bottom up approach to the adaptation from the point of view of a regular guy who didn't know what was going on. He was just reacting to what was happening around him. Spielberg wanted us to feel like that so he didn't explain anything to make us feel uneasy as well. In the film, Tom Cruise fixes cars as a hobby and suggested to his mechanic friend how to fix the van. That suggestion worked which is why near the beginning only one car was running. The scene where Tom Cruise tries to stop his son from going to see the fight symbolizes the dilemma america has about going to war in iraq. A part of the US (represented by Robbit) feels like they need to do something, anything about what happened on 9/11 even though many people know that it's futile. The remake of this film made in the context of 9/11 is no coincidence and you can see so many references like the powder all over Tom after the initial attack is a direct reference to the dust covering everyone after the towers collapsed. The pods were buried underground but the aliens came from space riding the lightning bolts into the pods. Similar to how the terrorists came from abroad and used US airliners as weapons.
Speilberg also did some very clever adaptations from the original. In the original film, at the end everyone finds shelter in a church right before the bacteria begins to kill the aliens. In the new version, the church gets demolished when the pod appears from the ground. An interesting and cynical comment about religion as salvation. The two elderly people in at the mothers home at the end were also the actors from the original film. Nice. Anyway, I could go on and on but you get the idea I hope.
It's fine if you didn't enjoy the film or thought it was stupid or whatever, I know a lot of people who hated it. But I think calling it BAD is not a fair assessment.
Ok, now that I know some background and references of the movie, I think I can appreciate it a bit more of the making of the movie. But still, a good movie should be able to tie up all the loose ends and not let the regular viewers like me thinking "Ya, right. Sure" so many times in the movie. Maybe I should watch the original one and see what it's all about. I hope that one is better.
